General Accounting courses — questions
What is the difference between a bookkeeper and a general accountant?
A bookkeeper records daily transactions such as sales, purchases and payments. A general accountant does that too but also prepares adjustments, reconciliations and month-end closing, and often reviews reports before they go to management. Many people start as bookkeepers and grow into accountant roles once they are comfortable with closing and ERP work.
Do I need to learn Odoo or SAP to get an accounting job?
It is not always required, but it helps a lot. Many accounting job postings in Egypt and the Gulf mention a specific ERP, and Odoo and SAP come up often. Knowing how entries, reports and closing steps work inside one system makes it easier to learn another, so even basic hands-on practice gives you an advantage in interviews.
How long does it take to learn general accounting basics?
Typically, someone studying part-time can grasp the core of double-entry bookkeeping and journal entries within a few weeks. Becoming confident with month-end closing and ERP workflows takes longer and improves with practice. Course pages show what each course covers, so you can plan a path that fits your schedule.
Is general accounting a good starting point for working in the Gulf?
Yes. Strong general accounting skills are the base that Gulf employers expect before they consider you for specialized roles in VAT, payroll or financial analysis. Pairing them with ERP experience and good Excel makes your profile easier to match with job postings in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
About General Accounting
General accounting courses on Job Academy teach the daily work behind every set of financial statements: recording transactions, posting journal entries, reconciling balances and closing the month on time. It is the entry point for most finance careers, and nearly every company with an accounts department needs it.
What a general accountant does
A junior or general accountant keeps the general ledger accurate. That means booking invoices and payments, preparing accruals and prepayments, checking bank reconciliations and producing a trial balance that management can trust. Bookkeepers in small firms often handle all of this alone, while accountants in larger companies own one part of the close. Employers range from small trading businesses in Cairo and Alexandria to manufacturers, retailers and service groups in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dubai, and they increasingly expect accountants to work inside an ERP rather than in spreadsheets alone.
Skills you build
Courses in this subcategory focus on four starter skills: bookkeeping, journal entries, month-end closing and ERP use, with Odoo and SAP as the systems you will see most often in job postings. You learn the double-entry logic first, then apply it to common scenarios such as depreciation, inventory adjustments and intercompany entries. Those are the tasks interviewers tend to test when hiring for Junior Accountant, General Accountant and Bookkeeper roles.
From course to application
Each accountant job on Job Academy lists the skills it needs and links to courses that teach them. When you complete a course, your Certificate of Completion attaches to your application and the employer can verify it in one click. Fresh commerce graduates, career switchers and accountants planning a move to the Gulf can all use this subcategory as their foundation before specializing in tax, payroll or analysis.
